Thursday Thirteen: Leo and Cecil Edition

THURSDAY THIRTEEN!!

YAY it's THURSDAY! That means it is CECIL BLOGGY DAY!! I hope you are as excited as I am!

Today I am going to share my Thursday 13 with Leo the Lion! Mommie says that he is my big brother who went to the bridge before me. She says I probably would have bugged him a lot, but that he would have taken care of me anyway. So I am going to let Leo have half of my 13: he will say 7 things about himself and then I will say 6 things I did this week!

I am my Mommie's first cat.
I raised Timby, my Grandma's cat, acause Mommie and I still lived with her when he came home (Mommie was only 13 years old). He eventually gotted way bigger than me!
I like to stand up tall like a mongoose.
I was really sad when my Mommie lefted for college without me. I tried to sneak away in one of her boxes. I am glad she eventually moved out of her freshman dorm into an apartment and broughted me to her! We were never meant to be apart!
I really love to lay in the sunbeams!
I also really love to lay on top of nice warm, clean laundry when it comes out of the dryer!
And sometimes I like to make funny faces. Do you like my funny face? My ear is doing something funny too!

And now let me bring your attention back to me, CECIL THE COUGAR!

Here are 6 fun things I did this week!

I made a MESS of my food bowls!
Made super stinky poops so that Mommie had to clean my litter box early! Here I am telling Mommie, "go on maid, clean the box and add new litter!"
I went out onto the screened in patio and looked at things!

I saw a lot of GREEN:
I acted cute for the camera so that Mousie would continue to fink I am Cexi Cecil
I put big bitey marks into Mommie's lotion so that now it comes out in many different places. I thought this would be helpful, but Mommie wasn't too happy.
...and the fing I did most was fink about how grateful I am to everyone who encouraged Mommie to let me stay! It is taking me a long time to fank each person individually acause I am doing it in secret. I went over to Zoolatry and they helped me find some really cool outfits since I am now in the Secret Cat-Service!

Did I fool you??? These are very good disguises!!!

Leo's Story

Hi everycat!

As you know, I will be making my Thursday 13 tomorrow, and I is very very excited! A special guest will also be making a Thursday 13 on my bloggie tomorrow... I cannot tell you who it is just yet!

I wanted to make this special post because Mommie has been feeling a little bit sad this past week. See this Saturday, May 3rd, would be Leo the Lion's 10th purrthday. I fink many of you know that Leo is the Great Kitty who Came Before Me. She was looking through some old pictures last night and also came across Leo's story that she wrote so that she would never, ever forget.

Leo had Chronic Renal Failure. Everyone who is signed up for the Mewsletter will be able to read all about this common disease in the issue that comes out at Midnight tonight.

But Mommie wants to post Leo's story. She wonders if anyone else has dealt with a kitty who has CRF and what kind of treatments they were/are on. If you have time, you can read Leo's story here. Mommie finally feels ready to talk about it, but she doesn't know anyone else who has experienced this before. She figured the blogosphere was the best place to find someone to talk to.

Hi Everycat and their Mommies!

Fanks so much for all of your kind words! Mommie and I feel so incredibly blessed to know all of you, and yes we really do feel like we know each of you. Fanks to all of my best friends in the CB and fanks to all of my friends who came out from lurking to e-mail me and Mommie.

Mommie had to take some time to decide what she was going to do. She really never ever ever wanted to stop helping me blog, and she didn't know how she would stop reading your blogs!

So we will continue being a part of your world!!! Fanks to everyone soooo much for helping me change Mommie's mind! All day yesterday when she looked at me she saw all of your faces. What did everyone do for Fashion Friday or Formally Feral Friday? We was very sad not to know.

So this is what we has decided for now: we will blog every week for Thursday Thirteen and will tell 13 things I has done during the week! We will also make a effort to visit all of your blogs as often as possible, without certain people noticing ;)

Hi Everyone,

This is my last post.

I am really sorry to leave the cat blogosphere behind. I have been truly inspired by your generosity towards each other, and I feel blessed to have been a part of this for the past couple months.

I have enjoyed reading all of your posts and will miss blogging tremendously. It has been a very fun past couple of months. I feel like I know all of you and your "mommies." The internet has a great ability to bring people with common interests together. Sometimes I feel like I have more in common with each of you, then some of the people in my real life... it's so true that only other cat-people can understand each other.

I will still be running Feline Direct and still sending out the Mewsletter. Unfortunately the personality of Cecil the Cougar is going away. There are people in my life who do not understand this hobby... I am not sure how I will go about continuing Phi Theta Gatos. I will have to speak to Crystal (Moki's mom regarding it). I will not let it disappear, but it may have to undergo some changes.

I will miss you all and be constantly wondering how you are doing.

Why Own a Cat?

When it comes to The Cat, there's a danger you know.
You can't own just one, for the craving will grow.
There's no doubt they're addictive, wherein lies the danger
While living with lots, you'll grow poorer and stranger

One cat is no trouble, and two are so funny,
The third one is easy, the fourth one's a honey
The fifth is delightful, the sixth one's a breeze.
You find you can live with a houseful, with ease.

So how 'bout another? Would you really dare?
They're really quite easy, but Oh Lord, the hair!
With cats on the sofa and cats on the bed,
And crates in the kitchen, its no bother, you said.

They're really no trouble, their manners are great.
What's just one more cat and one more crate?
The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty.
The floor is all footprints, the furniture's dusty.

The housekeeping suffers, but what do you care?
Who minds a few nose prints and a little more hair?
So let's keep a kitten, you can always find room.
And a little more time for the dust cloth and broom.

There's hardly a limit to the cats you can add
The thought of a cutback, sure makes you sad.
Each one is special, so useful, so funny,
The food bill grows larger, you owe the vet money.

Your folks never visit, few friends come to stay,

Thankful Thursday:

I has only been a part of the blogosphere for a couple months now, but I am so amazed at how close everyone is. What Cat Friends Helping Friends is doing is wonderful, and is inspired by all of you who came to each others rescue; came to the aid of a stranger whose face you only recognize as a tabby cat or a tuxie or a ginger, a meezer or even a curly cat. I am so fankful to be a part of this, because the world is going crazy but because of the cat blogosphere Mommie and I know there are still lots of selfless people left.

(I fink maybe you can tell Mommie wrote a lot of that paragraph, but I agree!)

I would like to especially fank all the cats who has joined Phi Theta Gatos!

Hi Everyone, here I am again!

I'M BAAACCCKKK!

Has you missed me? I has missed everyone very much! So much has gone on since last Thursday! I was so scairt and then relieved to hear about Mom Laura and the kitties!

So you may be wondering what I has been up to during this M.I.A. session Mommie made me go through. Well, firstly you should know that I did everyfing I could to try to post. I even asked Daddy's help, but he is not so much into this "cat blogging deal that you and your Mommie are into."

Here I am on Daddy's chair, asking nicely:

"Peas help me blog, I am so sad and pathetic without my furriends!"

No luck.

So then I resorted to just moping around for a couple days. Then I thought of a plan!

If I steals Mommie's Starbucks and sit on her papers she will haf to help me blog! How can she do school stuffs with no caffine and no papers?! I was finking that I was a genius and this is why I do not have to go to schools...

But then I look over .....

And what do I see?
Mommie has many more papers and big books over there.

After another day of hard contemplation, I came up with a new plan! I will go INSIDE the computer itself, find where the innernets hide in it and blog myself!

So I made my way inside of the computer, but I could not find the innernets.

I did find that the computer has a couch inside of it though!

None of my plans worked out too well. I wish I could have called up my furriend Boy, because he is a Genius and I bet he could have thought of a good plan. But I do not know how to use the fellytone.

So I am really hoping that you all have not forgotted me, or hate me because I has not been visiting you. I really, really wanted to!! Maybe, if you is not mad at me, we can play a quick game of Eskimo together?

Thirteen fings about me, Cecil:

I was born on August 28, 2007. This means that I is now 7 whole months old!

HEY YOU!

Don't I look very big and mancatly for my age?
I really love to give the big bitey to Mommie's bras.

I gets them out of the laundry and drag them all over the house!

Mommie gets embarrassed when visitors see me chomping on them!
Daddy gave me the nickname, "Your Cat." He usually uses this nickname to refer to me when I do something naughty. For instance he says to Mommie, "Your Cat chewed a hole in my new shirt." or "Your Cat took a stinky poopie" (he uses more colorful words that I am not allowed to say) or "Look at what Your Cat broke!"
Mommie wrote a poem about me. It goes like this:
"Cecil Wecil pudding pie kissed the girls and made them cry!"

I am not sure what girls Mommie finks I has kissed though, because that is gross! COOTIES!

The only girl I pucker up for like this is Mommie cause she gives the Temptations!

Sometimes I even gets a bit shy visiting girl bloggies like Daisy, Parker, SophieKitty and all my other girl cat furriends
I has excellent teefs and use them to give the Big Bitey a lot to Mommie and Daddy.
Sometimes if Mommie walks past my litter box when I am pooping, I will run out to play with her even if I am not done. Then I drag my butt along the tile floor until I get to her.
I talk to Mommie and Daddy a lot. Mommie says this is because my Grandma-cat is a Meezer.
I has very nice stripes, I fink you will agree.
I has only hissed one time in my whole entire life. This was at the groomers when they viciously clipped my nails while telling me I was a nice kitty. I showed them!
My best friend is a penguin named Mr. Penguin. I call him Penguin when i am mad at him.
I do not have any brothers and sisters.
I really like to go inside the refrigerator and pretend I am an Eskimo.
It is my dream to go to Disney World and meet the Giant Mousie! I would like to give him my Super Duper Big Mancat Cecil Bitey!

Good Morning!

Today Nermal has tagged me for a meme. Fanks Nermal, I fink that I was the last kitty in the blogosphere who has not been tagged for this great meme yet! I am glad to be joining the distinguished Literate Kitty group.

So there is two books very close to me: The Power Elite and The Complete Encyclopedia of Cats. I am wondering which one would be more interesting to post from. It is a very hard decision.

My New Jungle Gym

Hi Everycat,

So if you remember, yesterday I says that Mommie got me a new toy for helping her study! Well, here it is, my amazing new jungle gym:

You can see that it comes in brown and green which are the natural colors of a jungle. It also has a small palm tree on the side which gives it a tropical jungle feel.

My Mommie says to me, "Cecil I got you something on clear-ants at Target." And I am finking, Mommie I do not want anyfing to do with clear ants. I will not be able to see them and they will give ME the bitey! I was really finking that my Mommie lost her mind. But as far as I can tell there are no clear ants on my jungle gym. So I is not sure what Mommie was talking about...

But playing on my new jungle gym is very fun...and also very exhausting. After you climb in all the holes and whap all the green things you will become very tired.

Hi Everybody!

Here I is:

I hope that you were not missing me toooo much! My Mommie is a college bean (she is graduating with her BA in December!) and has exams right now. This means that she is not letting me get on the computer as much. It is not very nice of her, but I am a considerate little cat. She is not so considerate. She does not understand how I miss my furriends when I am not on the computer. But that is ok. So since I cannot gets on the computer, I has been helping her study.

To help your Mommie or Daddie study there are certain steps you has to take. The most important one is to be on the look out for any distractions. Here I am being a good scout:

Nothing is going to interrupt MY Mommie while I is on duty.

Sometimes you can get a little sleepy working so hard and maybe it is ok to let your eyes close just a little bit... As long as your ears are still alert.

Sometimes you will have to let out a big yawn. I have heard it is not good to keep them in. Just let it right out.

And then maybe sometimes you will fall asleep.... this is not good, but it may happen. When this happens then your Mommie will get a BIG distraction. The distraction is that you look so cute sleeping she has to document it.

Silly Mommie! Do your work!

Mommie says that even though I fell asleep I is still a good little helper. You will not believe the present she got me for being so helpful! I will shows you tomorrow...

Revisiting the Litterbox...

After my post on Sunday about my new litter, many of you has told me that crystal litter may not be good. My Mommie got scairt that she was poisoning me, so we did a little researches about litter.

After researching many websites, I has found that crystal litter does not cause significantly more health problems than clay litter. The myth that crystal litter can harm us kitties if it is ingested is not true. This myth stems from the belief that crystal litter and silica gel based litter is the same thing. Although the two types of litter look similar they are very different; silica based litter is made from the same ingredients that those little “do not eat” packets are made from that you find in many products to help maintain freshness.

Some facts about Crystal Litter:

Crystal litter actually produces LESS dust than clay litter and therefore can be healthier for your cat. If your cat is a real digger in the box, he or she may inhale dust from the clay litter and develop what is called “clay lung.” If you are using a clay litter, you may want to look for a “dust free” formula to prevent this.

Crystal litter absorbs urine faster and longer than clay litter. It is biodegradable, flushable, easy to clean up and best of all NON-TOXIC.

Crystal litter can control odors in a litter box for up to 30 days in a one cat household (if stirred every couple days).

Many cats will refuse to use crystal litter due to the texture of the crystals underneath their paws.

There have been a couple instances where a crystal has been lodged inside the eye of a cat due to overly vigorous digging activities. However it should be stated that the same thing can happen with clay litter or any other object/toy that is lying around your house or yard.

I hope that I have debunked some of the myths behind crystal litter, although preference is up to each cat. Personally I am really liking the crystal litter, but may try Feline Pine as well.

Fat Cats & Baby...

Today we must honor Baby the Cat. Baby has gone to the rainbow bridge after 38 years of being his mom and dads baby. Baby is named as the oldest feline by Cat Fancy. Baby was rescued from a garage as a little tiny baby cat.

Baby was certainly in very good health conditions. What is worrying to me is that some of us is not in such good conditions. According to this article, mousies are no longer scairt of us because we is too fat to chase them. I am not very sure this is true because us mancats had a mousie hunt party this weekend, and we caughted a mousie and a mole! We also burped and pooped in the great outdoors. Because that is what MANcats do. Burp and Poop. And catch mousies.

New Litter

Mommie boughted me a new type of litter. It is called Fresh Step Crystals. Even though Sunday is normally my day off, I want to give you a report on the litter. I did not give a report yesterday anyway. I was too angry to report anything. I am over that now.

Here is the new litter and also my box.

Oh and in case you were wondering....

Mr. Penguin and I made up. He is allowed to share my box again. This is a good thing because he makes smelly penguin poops and Mommie gotted mad that his droppings were all around the house.

I am a little bit intimidated to be pooping on something so precious as crystals. But I will do it for the sake of good reporting... in I goes!

(Sidenote to Mommie: You needs to clean my box better. I can see litter paw prints! I is not happy about this. I is embarrassed that my cat friends will see this! Peas do a better job!)

So I am happy to say that both Mommie and I are peased with my new litter. Mommy likes the odor control, I like playing in the crystals, and we both fink the crystals are pretty! I fink if you try this litter you will like it too.

If you use a different kind of litter, such as Feline Pine I would like to hear your opinion. I has always used Fresh Step. Just not the crystals. Crystals are fit for a Prince. I must be a Prince.

But then I gotted really mad because Mr. Penguin, who is SUPPOSED to be my bestest friend started laughing at me

Mr.Penguin's laughing made me very mad. We got into a fight.

Cecil can communicate...from the beach!

I feel like I has had a long week guys. Really I do. I asked Mommie to peas take me and Mr.Penguin to the beach so we can relax, and she did! Here is a video of us at the beach...which looks and smells suspiciously like my kitchen..... but there are palm trees so I am not sure.

"Mr. Penguin, this is all highly suspicious. You are a water animal, what do you think?"

"Yes Cecil, it is very highly suspicious. But I come from cold water climates so I am not positive either."

"I cannot feel the sand between my paws and it does not smell right. I am leaving!"

...But anyways, I found this article today called Cat Facts-- Ten Facts About Feline Behavior. Funny enough, it was written by a bean, I am so serious. Let's see if he got it right...

My Mommie and Daddy are equally social thank you very much. They met at a party in college and got very social together.

This is true. I did not have good socialization so I give the bitey a lot. Clearly it is not my fault.
When recovering from a trauma, such as a car accident, cats can go through a second socialization process.

Domestic cats descended from solitary creatures. Being solitary and hunting alone by nature, they have a limited set of communication skills for confrontation, especially body language.

In order to make up for a limited set of communication skills, cats need to use scent markings to send and receive messages. They also need to be fast and agile!
You better start running! You cannot call my communication skills limited and get away with it!
Your cat will rub her scent glands all over her territory in order to leave his/her mark.
Maybe I will and maybe I won't.
Cats will often raise their back ends up so as to better scent a hand. They'll also often stiffen their tail, but keep it bent as they scent you up.
You bet I am raising my back end at you! ...limited communication skills....
A vertical tail is a sign of happiness, and also used as a greeting.

When the front paws are curled up and tucked in, and the back legs are outstretched to the side, your cat is relaxed and secure.

RIP Mr. Lion Paw and Beans taking over Blogs!

I has missed my postings for only two whole days and I has so much to tell you! First, I has not been posting because my tummy was not well. See, I was playing and playing and playing with Mr. Lion (one of my most favoritest toys) and his foot came off in my mouth and I SWALLOWED him all up! His foot was num num-- but then I did not feel so good. Mommie did not know that I swallowed Mr. Lions foot, she only knew that I wasn't being as playful as usual. I was still eating and stuff ... well then this morning, I left a present in the bathroom. Mommie though, "oh! my little boy is growing up- his first hair ball!" But it was more of a Mr. Lions-left-paw-ball. Now I feels all better!

Here I am when I was not feeling well and resting up:

Oh! And then today Mommie came home from work with a present for me! A new fashion to wear for Fashions Friday! I really love it and cannot wait to show it off. But it came at a price; I was taken somewheres I has never been before and somewheres that I hope to never go again: the groomers. They savagely held me down against my will, even though I was letting out big mancat-cougar growls, and they CLIPPED MY TOE NAILS!!!! How rude! I really needed those! One thing I did like though, was that the crazy savage lady said, "he is so big for seven months old!" No one has ever said I was big for my age before! I am a big mancat with big mancat muscles and everyone can see how big and macatly I am for my age!

But even when I was itty bitty I was a good tiny mancat.
I had a good prowl and was alert to everything!

Ok so now an article that I must warn you all about: warning warning! Beans are trying to take over the cat blogosphere! I am not even kidding!! Look at this:

This bean has ordered a new furr-niture extension and brainwashed her cat to sit on it, so that she can take over his blog!!!! As soon as Mr Orange Tabby (I am witholding his real name so that he does not get embarassed) closes his eyes or turns his head, the crazy bean will start typing furiously away on his blog!

PEAS, do not let your bean order this furr-niture extender!

If beans start blogging for us, who knows what the world will come to! Just thinking about it is making me exhausted!

Evolution of a Cecil Cougar

Happy Easter Everycat! I am happy to report that the Giant Bunny did not get into mine house! I locked the doors and prowled all night! I am very proud of my prowling skills. I think if the Giant Bunny would have come to mine house he would have saw me and started shaking in his boots.

Today on this very hoppy day off, I would like to share the evolution of a Cecil Cougar. I will show you the many stages that have been documented so far.

Let's start with a baby Cecil Cougar:

Please ignore that yes a Cecil Cougar has fleas in this picture. This was before a Cecil Cougar met his Mommie and was still at the Bad Place. These were some of the first pictures that Mommie received of the cougar. She says, "yes please, I would like that cougar. I will come get him as soon as he is ready for me."

This is a Cecil Cougar at 10 weeks old.

This is also a Cecil Cougar the day that he meets his Mommie for the first time!

This is a picture of the very first time I...I mean a Cecil Cougar was ever in his Mommie's arms! You can see that he fits perfectly!!!! PURR!!

I think you can see that the Cougar's stripes have not yet come in good.

Giant Kitty Rescue and Peanuts!

Today I am bringing you two stories from Best Friends Society. The first one is called Former FLOCK (For the Love Of Cats and Kittens) Prez Charged with Animal Cruelty and the other is about Peanut the Cat. I think you will really like the story about Peanut. She is a very brave cat, but you will have to read on to find out why!

Sharon "Sheri" Allen, former president of FLOCK has been formally charged with animal cruelty. This is a very good thing because she was not a good friend to cats. She did not allow hardly any volunteers into her shelter which will probably seem odd to you. She did not allow any in because she was housing over 800 malnourished and diseased cats. I am not even joking, 800. She was also found to have 114 cats in her house. It is not normal to have so many cats in your house I do not think.

"A volunteer tipped off county officers to the inhumane conditions inside the two-acre facility in Pahrump. The compound, surrounded by a 12-foot-high fence topped with barbed wire, was inhospitable desert landscape where the temperature often soared to 120 degrees.

Most of the cats were severely malnourished, some near death. They suffered from upper respiratory illnesses as well as ear mites, tapeworm, rotten teeth and gums, open wounds or eye infections. At least 40 died because they were so sick and weak."

"If convicted, she would face maximum penalties of up to six months in jail, 120 hours of community service and a fine of $1,000 on each count. She is scheduled to be arraigned April 14."

Now to a story that will make you much happier. Best Friends Society currently has a guest called Peanut. She was originally part of a feral community of cats. Then one day, a very mean person shot her. That was not nice of the mean human at all. She was brought to Best Friends and they nursed little Peanut back to health , but she was scairt of humans and did not trust them at all. She could not use her back legs anymore and spent most of her day sitting in the windowsill with a blank expressions not allowing any volunteers to touch her.

Then one day a volunteer decided to try petting Peanut while she was eating, and this worked! Peanut was too busy eating to think about getting away from the volunteer! Ever since then she has become a nicer friend to humans! She even has purred at some humans! I am very happy for her.

Also, I am just going to come right out and say it, she has nice furs. They remind me of someone else's furs, I just cannot quite put my paw on who...

Easter Lillies are not your furriend!

Today my Mommie's website is opening! She is very stressed out because she has already found three bugs to be worked out, and she is too tired to take care of it tonight. I wonder if you can find the three bugs...if so, peas don't mention it to her!

Now to my article...

Easter has come early this year, and this means many things. First is that the Giant Bunny will be invading houses this very weekend. Please remember to lock your doors. If you do not, this very large bunny will lay multi-colored eggs in your house. I am not sure how he does this, but it is not normal. I am not even kidding about this, please lock your doors!

Another thing that Easter means, is that your humans will be looking to get pretty white flowers called Easter Lilies. These flowers are very nice to look at, and even nice to give one or two sniffs to. The big problem is that Easter Lilies are toxic to us cats. It will be very tempting to give a bitey to the flower, but you must hold back. This is very serious.

If you do happen to give into temptation, you must notify your human right away. They will have to take you to the V-E-T. Yes, it is that serious! Even one or two bites can be deadly.

I hope that I have convinced you to stay away from Lilies and also to lock your doors this weekend.

Catnapping with Cecil

My mommie has been working very hard on the website (www.felinedirect.com), so I has not been able to get on the computer today. The website was SUPPOSED to open today, but because of some technical difficulties it will not open until tomorrow.

Since I am not to do any reportings today, I have decided to catch up on my mancatly duties of catnapping. I do not always get a chance to get enough naps in. It is such a shame!

Chef Cecil & my first Meme

The Meaoumy Troops has also asked me to researches what human food is ok for us cats to eat. Here is what I has found.

It is strongly inadvisable for you to eat your humans food. Some human foods are toxic to us because of our obviously, superior bodies. You should avoid the humans foods because they are often very fatty and toooooo spicy for our delicate palettes. This could results in runny, stinky poopies or yaking. On the other paw, you may get addicted to the humans food and need rehab. You also cannot live on peoples food because it does not contain taurine which we must has.

Then there is the fact that some humans food can KILL you. I am not even kidding.

Peas do not eat the following foods, no matter what:

-Onions, Garlic, or other veggies with roots
-Tomatoes or green (raw) potatoes
-Chocolate
-Grapes and Raisins

Oh and you should of course not have cow's milk. This is not toxic but my Mommie is lactose intolerant and I has seen her after "accidentally" drinking yummy milks. Just do not do it. It is not nice at all. You are most likely lactose intolerant as well. If you are a cat.

It is much better to just be a helper. I am always a helper in the kitchen. Please call me Chef Cecil.

Organic food vs. the regular stuff

My good furriends, the Meaoumy Troopers, asked me to make researches on whether organic foods is better than the regular stuff. Here is what I has found, the decision is up to you.

Narda Robinson, dmv at Colorado State University says this of organic cat food, "it probably can't hurt but there's no research that shows organic pet food is better." According to the article in USA Today, pet owners should first check with their vets before changing their cats diet. You must do this to make certain that the new diet will be completely balanced.

We cats have very busy schedules and must be well fed! First we has to nap and then we has to check the house for mousies, then we has to chase our tails, then we has to make stinky poops; our day really has no end!

As you may remember, Natural Balance is the crunchies that I eats:

to be near an open bag of crunchies!

According to Vet Robinson, "people are becoming more aware that if they adjust their animal's diets their animals can avoid certain illnesses, or perhaps require less medication for ailments from which they are already suffering. Organic diets take this one step further."

Despite all the buzz around organic cat food, Vet Cohen doesn't necessarily think organic foods are better than more traditional pet foods. He says, "I have a lot of concerns that not a lot of research has been done to assure proper balance of nutrients." Cohen is speaking about industry feeding standards that ensure a pet food is balanced for specific life stages. At the same time, Cohen acknowledges that traditional foods have higher levels of preservatives and dyes that, "don't do anything good for the animal." This is all accordings to an article on AZ Central.

With so many pet food recalls coming about lately, humans should take care to follow these bits of advice from The Best Friends Society Organization:

Avoid foods With:

-wheat gluten
-"byproducts" (should list an animal first, such as chicken byproduct)
-chemicals
-synthetic preservatives

Here is the ingredients for my crunchies:

Dr. Brown of Best Friends says this, "animals age better with better care. Inferior nutrition wears down animals immune systems and incites skin and coat problems. A lot of wheat and corn allergies we see in dogs and cats might be from pesticides and hormones used in food. We know that even low levels of pesticides increase the risk of cancer. If there is even the potential for a problem, why feed it?"

On that note, I will leave you with one final reminder that although organic food may be better it has not scientifically been proven to lengthen the lives of any pet.

I is a very picky eater. My Mommmie had to try several premium foods before I would accept this. Really, I would like to only accept food off Mommie's plate but Mommie is a piggy and does not leave many things on the plate for me! But that is ok because I love Natural Balance and I love my Mommmie!

Stir Crazy

Today I has two articles to discuss!

The first one makes my heart purr. A Kitten to Help Her Cope is one of the articles I has to share. Little 9 year old human-kitten Shannon was abducted a little less than one month ago. She was just found this past week! Shannon has to be questioned so that the please-men can find out what happened to her during the time she was missing and who is to blame. To keep Shannon's nerves calm, she has been given a kitten to play with while she is interviewed. Us kittens really do take on big responsibilities sometimes, but we are always happy to do it.

Here I am in my carrier reminding Mommie of her responsibility to take me out!

The next story I has to share is called, On the Trail of the Cat, Scientists Find Surprises. I find it very amusing that these beans think they can figure us cats out. They is smart for sure, but we will never give up all our secrets!

In one of the most comprehensive explorations of cats' origins to date, Lyons and her colleagues spent about five years collecting feline DNA, poking behind the whiskers of more than 1,100 Persians, Siamese, street cats and household tabbies around the world to swab inside their mouths.

By analyzing 39 genetic signposts in the samples, the researchers were able to investigate a variety of questions, including which breeds are most closely related and where they most likely originated.

Hey cool cats,

Fanks for all of your wonderful suggestions! Today I have one happy mews story and one sad mews story.

First the happy one: Randolph Rescinds $5 Cat Bounty . This is such happy mews! It was such an outrageous decision by Mayor Stupid anyway.

Now the sad one: Dad Forced 7 Year Old to Kill Family Cat . In Muncie Indiana, a drunk father told his three children that they need to "learn how to kill." One very furriendly and smart son hid the cat under his bed while his father was in the bathroom then put ketchup on a knife to trick his bad dad. The father later realized that the cat was still alive. At this point he put a knife in the hands of his 7 year old daughter and forced her to stab the cat. He then continued stabbing the cat himself, and then strangled it. This is all according to the affidavit that the Dad signed.

I have never heard of such things. To force a human-kitten to kill her beloved pet is awful. I am glad that I is in a very good home where Mommie and Daddy love me.

Here I am outside on my harness reflecting on all the bad mews I read this week.

Sometimes you just has to think about how lucky you is for food, a warm bed, and toesies to bitey.

I like to be thoughtful and thankful for my spoilt life. Thank you to all cats who are my furriend even if we has never met in real life.

Furriendly Furriday!

Today I am foregoing my mews article to help my Mommie. I am also going to introduce you to some furriends of mine!

First to Mommie... In lieu of all that I have reported to her about the bounty on cats in Iowa and O-HI-O, she has decided to plan a fundraiser to help spay/neuter local feral colonies here. This will also help bring attention to the shelter/low cost clinic that she volunteers at, which is Cats Exclusive! She needs your help in deciding where to host her fundraiser. Should it be a bowl-a-thon? She wants to do something that is fun and fambly oriented. Peas comment and help her come up with a place to host it! If you are in the south Florida area, you can volunteer to help! My Mommie always needs lots of help, sometimes she is a little crazy.

He is the Great Kitty that Came Before Me, he was also my Mommie's first kitty. She gots him when she was much younger. He actually helped raise Timby but that was a long time ago. Later he went back to being Mommie's only baby when she moved out for college.

He went to the rainbow bridge last August right after Mommie's birthday and right before I was borned. He had CRF, but that is all I know. My Mommie still does not like to talk about it. She says he is my guardian angel though! So he is Leo the Lion and I am Cecil the Cougar.

I hope you have enjoyed meeting my furriends that are not part of the blogosphere!

I has bad mews everyone, as I has only been reading about bad things in the mews lately. A seven month old baby cat was put in scalding hot water and then beheaded.

Then there is beautiful K.C. who was forced to inhales meth at a drughouse by some bad bad peoples. When K.C. resisted inhaling the drugs she was burned by the chemicals and then thrown out to the streets like a piece of trash. Luckily some humans rescued her and now she is looking for her furrever home!

Veronica has also tolds me that there is a bounty on cats heads in O HI O and this is also true in Iowa. The money used for euthanasia should be going to low cost manpart and ladypart stealing clinics and education.

Then of course there is still my problem with the government in Beijing. I am very angry with them and have been doing researches.

I have consulted my two big books, and do not see one reason why us Meows should be treated badly. Let me see here, on page 241 I quote, "Cats are amazing and should rule the world. Cecil especially. He should be President of the world."

I am thinking that this is a very presidential looking picture of me. I look stern and ready to take care of business.

Sometimes I day dream about what I would do as supreme ruler of the world...

Free tuna and temptations for EVERYCAT, free humans to control for EVERYCAT, free warm bed and toesies to bitey to EVERYCAT! Catnip to be sprinkled all over the ground instead of leaves for EVERYCAT to enjoy!

That is my big dream, but for now this journalist will settle for doing mews reports and researches.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am appalled at the unethical treatment of felines that has recently surfaced in Beijing,China. As reported through numerous news outlets, Beijing is currently "cleaning up" its streets so that the city will look welcoming when visitors for the Olympics arrive. As reported in the Daily Mail, "hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around. Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city."

The photographic evidence of this that surfaced worldwide this week has shocked and horrified many. I am taking action now to let it be known that this type of cruelty towards animals cannot and will not be tolerated by citizens of countries who participate in the Olympic Games.

I encourage all who are on the International Olympic Committee and all those on the Beijing and London Organizing committees who have a voice in this community, to stop the unethical and destructive treatment towards felines in Beijing. It is the responsibility of the Olympic committees to ensure that all aspects of the games and the host countries coincide with the values of the athletes, citizens of the host country, and viewers worldwide. Beijing must understand that this behavior is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately.

I have tried to find protest groups against this, and how to help. So far most of the protest groups are working anonimously within the country of China. They have to stay anonimous for fear of what the government will do to them. This is very very sad.

Feline Death Camps (updated with more pics as the story continues to break)

I am OUTRAGED. I have found several articles today that are reporting on what is happening to cats in China right now. They are being sent to Feline Death Camps due to the government using scare tactics. According to the Associated Newspapers, LTD, the Chinese government has been telling its citizens that cats are responsible for giving people SARS which is a respiratory disease that can be fatal. They are using this scare tactic by telling people they must put their cats outside to be picked up for special collection teams or their families might contract the deadly disease. Pregnant women are told by their doctors that they must "get rid of" the cat because "it will be bad for the baby."

Not only that, but two school teachers recently beat six stray cats to death with sticks when the cats showed up looking for food at the school play yard. They say, "We did it out of love for the children. We were worried the cats might harm them." The way they killed the cats was to lay out tuna as bait for the very hungry cats (two of which were pregnant females) inside of a cage. Then when the cats entered the cage, they beat them to death with sticks. The teachers say, "We were very worried the children might try to stroke them and that the cats might scratch them or pass on diseases. We had to get rid of the cats and this was the only way to do it." The. Only. Way. My. Butthole. I am sorry if that was vulgar, but this makes me very very angry.

This is not completely the teachers fault, the government has scared them into believing these lies that we are bad animals.

So to take care of the Cat Problem and to clean up the area so that Bejing looks welcoming for the Olympics, cats are being rounded up and sent to these death camps.

I am sorry to have to show you such a terrible thing, but this is what is happening to cats in over 12 death camps in Beijing.

Yan Qi was allowed access into one of the camps. She runs a cat sanctuary and this is what she had to say, "When we went inside, we saw about 70 cats being kept in cages stacked one on top of the other in two tiny rooms. Disease spreads quickly among them and they die slowly in agony and distress. The government won't even do the cats the kindness of giving them lethal injections when they become sick. They just wait for them to die. It is the abandoned pets that suffer the most and die the soonest. They relied so much on their owners that they can't cope with the new environment. Most refuse to eat or drink and get sick more quickly than the feral cats."

One woman, Hu Yuan has been an angel for the 250 abandoned cats that she has graciously taken into her small HOME. She says that 100 out of these 250 cats sleep in her bedroom with her, and ASTONISHINGLY she has not died from any disease! Imagine that! She cannot allow any of the cats to go outdoors because they will be rounded up and taken away. She says, "If I don't take them in, the government will kill them.People believe what the government tells them and that is why they are abandoning more and more family pets."

Yuan goes on to say, "the problem could be traced back to former president Jiang Zemin for the crackdown. He didn't like dogs so he decided to have dogs killed. But there was a bad reaction from the foreign media and they were pressured to stop. Now they have stopped killing dogs but the new victims are cats. "

Top Cat Toy of 2008 and Toy Responsibilities!

Playtime is very important for us cats, that is why today I am going to review an article about the top pet toys of 2008. The article is called, "Pet Connection Pros Pick Top Pet Products for 2008." The number one toy this year, picked by Dr. Marty Becker himself, is a CAT TOY! Yes, it is the Fling-ama-String! The Fling-ama-string was also the Cat Fancy Editor's Choice Award winner, so you know this must be a good toy.

We cats may not have money, but our humans have money and they are under our control! I will be having my Bosslady order me one of these ASAP!

Until I can review the product myself, I want to talk about the responsibility of having toys. Having toys is fun, but it also means that we must take care of our toys.

Here are some of my most favorite toys:

I must make sure that all of my toys stay in good condition, and that they are always clean and happy. These are three of the most important responsibilities of owning toys.

Here I am making sure that Mr. Snail is doing okay

"Well, how do you feel Snail?"

"I feel very well thank you, Cecil!"

It is good to know that I am able to keep my toys happy. Snail can be somewhat of a trouble maker, sometimes he picks on Mr. Penguin so I have to pay him special attention.

Another important responsibility in owning toys is to make sure they know how to defend themselves. Sometimes other cats or even woofies will want to play with your toys. I do not find this acceptable. I do not like to share my toys because they are mine mine mine mine.

Here I am teaching Mr. Lion how to make a paw-fist:

He is a very good learner. Anybody in the cat family is pretty smart and can pick up on things quickly.

I do not think that violence is a good answer, but if someone is trying to steal your toys then it is a good answer. Trust me, teach your toys to defend themselves, because if you are cat napping (another important responsibility), they will need to know how!

In fact, I think it is about time for a catnap right now. Responsibilities are very important and I would not want to neglect this one.

Sunday is my day off!

The Bosslady says that Sunday is my day off. I do not have to make news postings, unless there is big breaking news. So since I have a free day, I would like to introduce you to someone. He is my Not-of-My-Same-Species-Friend, and we have lots of fun together.

INTRODUCING.....

MR. PENGUIN!!

My Mommy (the Bosslady) brought Mr. Penguin home one day after I came home from the BadPlace, and he has been my best friend ever since! I will admit that at first I was very scairt of him because he was bigger than me. I know he looks small, but back then I barely weighed 2lbs. I was a very little boy...

See how small I used to be? This is a picture of me on the day that I met my human Mommy, The black kitty on the outside is my Cat mom. You can see that I would very much like to be with her, but the Bad Man took her away from me when I was still very, very, very young. He did not know anything about raising kittens!

So my human Mommy came and took me away, and then I learned what love was. She spent many many dollars on me so that I could be fixed up, I had earmites so severe the vet thought my ear drums were ruptured, and I was covered in fleas. The vet said I probably got the ear mites when I was only one week old. I also got vaccinations because I had not had any yet even though I was 10 weeks old. AND I got to taste kitten food for the first time. Before my human Mommy came, I had been fed adult cat food and so I was not growing very fast. But anyway, this post is supposed to be about MR. PENGUIN!

So the day after my human Mommy brought me home, she got me my penguin friend! We do everything together!

Sometimes he is a copy cat and will lay in the same position as me. But I do not mind that he is copying me because he is my Not-of-My-Same-Species-Friend.

Vitamin recall, Kitten Adventure, and Feline Lukemia treatment

Today I am going to review two articles, but first I have to make sure that you are all aware that there is a vitamin recall! The Hartz company has recalled 739 bottles of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to a possible contamination with salmonella. The bottles that are being recalled have the lot number of No. SZ 22771. It is very important that if you have a bottle with this lot number to have your human discard it and to report any sudden illnesses to your V E T.

Now I have a very happy article to report to you! The article is titled, "Kitten Survives Trip in Shipping Crate."

This little baby cat was packaged and shipped along with some spooled steel. The box was closed on Friday Feb. 4th and then shipped THREE days later. When the package arrived in Cleveland, the baby cat was discovered. Unfrtunately during the trip his Mom Cat and brothers and sisters went to the Rainbow Bridge. The good news is though that he is doing very very well!

The next article is one that has ignited much hope in my purring little heart. "Imulan Working on Treatment for Feline Lukemia." Vet Craig Woods has formed a company called TR Biosurgical LLC, and his company researches tissue-regenerating technology. He has formed a partnership with Imulan Biotherepeutics company which currently researches and creates treatments for kitty illnesses. Woods' company has created a second partnership with T-Cyte Therapeutics who are currently researching and developing a new class of proteins that control stem cell functions. "These proteins enable animals to use their own adult stem cells to repair damaged or diseased tissue." Together these three companies are trying to develop a treatment for feline leukemia!!!

YAY! Let us cross our paws and purr that this will happen very soon!

I know that many of my new feline friends were once shelter kitties who have found their furr-ever homes. So in honor of all the shelter kitties who have found their families, I want to share some information I found on the ASPCA website. To help increase adoption and to place the right cat into the right homes, the ASPCA has come up with a feline personality test. You do not need to be a former shelter kitty to choose a feline-ality!

Private Investigator:

I'm working undercover to keep an eye on you and your household. You may not even know you're under surveillance. I can vanish into thin air if anyone or anything interferes with my investigation. If you need a cat who knows how to stay out of trouble and will always keep your secrets, I just might take your case.

Secret Admirer:
When it comes to relationships, I'm very level-headed. I don't leap in paws first, if you know what I mean. But give me a little time, and then I'll shower you with purrs, head-butts, and plenty of lap time. In the meantime, you may not see a lot of me, but I'll be thinking a lot of you!

Love Bug:
Do you seek affection? I do! If you also like petting, purrs, and paws kneading your lap, I think we might have a LOT in common. I'm looking for "someone who enjoys quiet times and togetherness." Could that someone be you?

The Executive:
I have to say, I'm a busy cat. First, I've got to check out what's happening out the window. Next, I'll see if any closets or cupboards need looking into. And then there are my naps--can't be late for those. I can fit a little socializing into my schedule. Shall we plan on breakfast and dinner? I hope you like kibbles.

Sidekick:
Like all sidekicks, I'm just plain good company. I like attention, and I also like my solitude. I don't go looking for trouble, but I'm no scaredy-cat, either. If you are looking for a steady companion to travel with you on the road of life, look no further.

Personal Assistant:
You're working on the computer? Let me press the keys. Reading the paper? I'll hold the pages down for you. Watching TV? I'll just plop in your lap so you can pet me. I love an orderly household, don't you? I'll help you with all your chores, and I'll help you relax when we're done. You'll wonder how you ever managed without me.

M.V.P.:
I'm a savvy cat who knows the score. I'm pretty unflappable, too. I don't mind entertaining myself, but a human companion at the other end of the couch and a nice scratch behind the ears always make my day. If you're looking for a resourceful addition to your team, think about signing this Most Valuable Pussycat.

Party Animal:
I'm a cat on a mission: PARTY! I love to play and explore and test my limits. I'd love to play with you, but I can make a toy out of anything: pencils, post-it notes, potatoes. If you're looking for some laughs and someone to liven up the party, think about inviting me.

Leader of the Band:
I'm a cat who does everything in a big way. I not only like to be in the middle of things--I like to lead the parade. I would say that I am the Leader of the Band type. I am very curious and make sure to snoopervise everything!

Oh and too clear up any confusion that I am not the Boss of my household: I am.

You see, while I am working I call my Mommy the Bosslady because she pays the temptations; I cannot open the package myself. But really, I am the boss of the house. If I don't get my way, I give the bitey. The V E T told my Mommy I was just teething and would grow out of this stage, but that is a joke. I will always give the bitey if I don't get my way! Meowhahahaha!

Cecil's Tips for Staying in Tip-Top Hunting Shape

I think that perhaps my mews articles from yesterday made some kitty's and their humans sad, so today I will try to cheer everyone up! Today I am not going to review any particular article, but talk from my own experience. I want to muse about what kinds of things we cats need to eat to stay in tip top hunting shape. I mean, even if the fiercest thing we chase is a catnip-filled mousie, one never knows when a a vishus deer might sneak up.

So to stay in tip top shape, I start my day off with a balanced breakfast. Here I am with my favorite crunchy goodness, Natural Balance. It is an ultra premium cat food, which means that it smells and tastes extra good, and is all natural. I cannot put any artificial ingredients in this lean mean fighting machine body!

Along with my Natural Balance crunchies, I also get a C.E.T. Chew with my breakfast. This is to help my teeth stay clean and strong. The V E T gave it to me last time I went, and although it is sometimes hard to tell if the V E T is being helpful or trying to take my manparts, this turned out to be a good day!

Here I am making sure that the V E T did not try to slip anything past me. They smell ok, so I will nom down!

The very best part of the day for keeping fit, is choosing a very balanced and delicious dinner. The V E T told my Bosslady that I must have wet food so that my kid-neys function properly. I did not know I had any kids, but if I do I certainly want their neys to function properly. The only problem is, somtimes the flavor decision is hard.

"Hey Bosslady, which one should I choose today?"

Maybe I should close my eyes, and pick randomly ...

....

YAY! I chose chicken flavors! That is actually my favorite.
Maybe I peeked a little....

But there is even more to being in tippy top shape, than just eating right. You must take all the right medicines as well. Yes, this includes going to the V E T at least once a year for rooster shots. You see, roosters are a very important bird and they can ward off sicknesses. So the V E T collects some of the healing powers and gives them to us. See, the V E T is not always bad.

You must also take other medicines as I will demonstrate below.

It is very important to always read the labels before taking medicines!

Here I am with my Advantage Multi and Frontline Heartguard. My Heartguard guards my heart and I guard it. Even though I am a spoilt indoor kitty, I sometimes get to go out on my harness and leash so it is important for me to stay on these medicines at all times. My bosslady says, "it is much more pleasant to prevent fleas and ticks, than it is to deal with the consequences." When I first came home from the BadPlace, I had really really bad earmites and fleas. My Bosslady says that as long as we are taking care of each other, I will never have to have those again. But that is a whole different story....

Well, that is all I have for today on health, but did any of you notice that I have a new fashion on in these pictures?

Animal Cruelty: An Across Species Problem

After posting about the cruelty done to the poor woofie yesterday, I realized that animal cruelty is a much bigger problem than any of us spoiled cats realize.

Today I am going to review two articles that are best not read by the faint of heart. The first is titled, "Kitten Killer Gets Probation" and the second is, "Alford Plea in Kitten Drowning".

In Canada, a man admitted that he broke the leg of a four month old kitten, and the next day suffocated it. The man broke the defenseless kittens leg by kicking it. The next day, the kitten was walking around on the shaky leg, and foaming at the mouth. When the kitten saw his attacker he instinctively hissed at the man and bit him three times (the same as any of us would do). It was at this point that the man grabbed the kitten, suffocated him, and then buried him in the woods. The poor kitten's owners filed a lawsuit against the man, but he was only given 12 months probation.

In Kentucky we have another sad story in which a man who is posing as an educated person, a horticulture Professor, drowned a kitten. He claims that he mistook it for a raccoon.

Bill Fountain, the professor, had a raccoon trap set up in his backyard. The kitten, who was only 5 months old, was trapped. Fountain reached towards the cage and the tiny, baby kitten "grabbed or bit" him, so he tossed it into a water drum and drowned him. He is not sure if the kitten grabbed or bit him. He also does not know the difference between a raccoon and a kitten. My Bosslady would not want this man teaching her human children (if she had any).

You can choose whether you would like to play to feed cats or dogs, the option is located on the sidebar on the left side of the questions. Please feed the cats, we are very far behind the woofies! Animal Cruelty

We may not always get along with our dog friends, but they deserve the same respect and care as any other living creature. I just came across this article that states there is a video showing a marine throwing a puppy off a very large cliff. Read it here. Animal cruelty is very serious business, and I do not understand why anyone would do something like this.

Special Edition: Feline Fashions

Good Morning to all!

Today I am presenting a Special Edition news article. I have noticed that many cats in the blogosphere model fashions. The bosslady sent me to report on Fashion Week in NY, but I got kicked out of all the shows for trying to get onto the catwalk. Now I am sorry, but how was I supposed to know that I cannot go on the catwalk? It is called a CAT walk, not a human walk! I just wanted to show everyone that it is much more fashionable to walk on four legs. So I think that maybe if I have some better fashions next year, I might get onto the cat walks!

Here I am looking through one of the bosslady's fashion magazines:

This blue shirt is my only fashion :(

I cannot find any boy fashions in this silly magazine! I also cannot find any four legged fashions! Maybe if I close my eyes and wish real hard some boy fashions will appear...

Here goes nothing...I am wishing very hard....

But I still do not see any boy fashions, do YOU??

This makes me very angry! They are discriminating! I must give the bitey!

"Uh-oh! Bosslady, please don't fire me. I HAD to give the bitey so this magazine would learn not to discriminate!"

The bosslady was not pleased that I gave they bitey to one of her sacred magazines. She says that she will not help me find more boy fashions but that I can use my earnings to buy them for myself. I get paid 10 temptations per news article. Do any of you know where I can buy boy-cat fashions?

I really want to report from the catwalk at fashion week next year!

Senior Cat Health & Gazelles...?

Hey Cool Cats! I researched two stories for today, one that concerns health and one that is just a little bit strange. The first one is titled, “Overactive thyroids can age cats quickly,” and it was written by Melissa Wheeler, DVM for the Central Veterinary Hospital and 24 Hour Animal Emergency.The second article talks about how we cats must now accept gazelles into the family! Last month Lucky the 15-year-old kitty that lives with V-E-T Wheeler started behaving strangely. Wheeler brought Lucky into her office and ran some tests. They came back showing that Lucky has hyperthyroidism, which is common in senior aged cats. Most of the time hyperthyroidism disguises itself as, “old age,” and is mistaken as just another common ailment of getting on in the years.

This is how Wheeler describes hyperthyroidism:

“Two thyroid glands are located in the neck on each side of the trachea. These glands produce thyroid hormone. In hyperthyroidism, too much of this hormone is produced. Cats with this disease may suffer from weight loss, hyperactivity, poor grooming, vomiting or diarrhea. Oftentimes, they’ll have great appetites but can’t seem to maintain themselves.These outward symptoms can be distressing, but the real danger of hyperthyroidism occurs on the inside. Commonly, hyperthyroidism causes an abnormal heart rhythm and increased stress on the kidneys and liver."

The article states that there are three types of treatment: radiation, surgery, and oral medacine. If you are feeling off color, please talk to your human about going to see the V-E-T. They are not always bad. I have recently researched and found out they do more than just cut off man parts!

Now to lighten up the subject, I would like to speak about an article titled, “Baby gazelle thinks it’s a cat and believes its mother is a human.” There is this crazy (non-vishus) gazelle that was separated from his mother when he was only a day old. At this time a nice human lady decided to foster him in her house. Apparently this crazy gazelle gets along with the ladys cats very well, and they even PURR at him! You must read this article!

Keeping our humans healthy is important!

Hello to all my new furriends!

In keeping with the theme of March being pet health month, I thought I would review an article on how we keep our humans healthy! The article I read is titled, “Studies Show Owning a Cat Reduces Risk of Heart Attack.” Now I don’t know who wrote this article, but I am pretty sure that we cats are the ones doing the owning. I mean, WE are the ones who are responsible for reducing their risk of heart attack. We are also responsible for waking our humans up in the morning, making sure they brush their teeth correctly by watching on the bathroom counter, making sure their porcelain litter box is clean if they leave the lid up, and so much more! We really do have to stay on top of them. But getting on to the point, Lianne Duggan of the Douglas Institute in Quebec stated “Cats are so calm when you look at them. They manifest the kind of quality that makes us calm,” and what else could be true? We cats realize that you just have to take each moment as it comes, and always make time to stop and sniff the nip. The problem is that our humans are always running around like chickens with their heads cut off (sorry chicken friends); we need to offer them some of the nip!

This particular study was conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Institute and was presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference this year. The study showed that while we cats have a heart attack reducing effect, woofies do not have this same effect. This does not surprise me, but I do not hold it against the woofies. They are another species that needs to learn to stop and smell the nip every once in a while.

So in conclusion, please offer your humans some of the nip and give them extra headbutts to keep them healthy!

March is Pet Nutrition Month

In lieu of March being pet nutrition month, I thought I would review a recent article that compares canned food to dry food.

Upon reading the article entitled “Canned food has the same nutrition as dry,” I found that it was very obviously written by a human and not a fellow feline. The article compares canned food to dry food, and states that the nutritional values are the same. I am not so sure I agree with this; very often my belly tells me it is much more satisfied after eating canned food. My taste buds agree with my tummy 110% of the time on this matter. If my tummy and taste buds are more satisfied, than my nutritional needs must have been met in a most satisfactory way!

Anyway, let us get to the facts that this article presents. The article states that canned food simply has higher water content but holds no additional nutritional value over dry food.

It says one common side effect of feeding a canned food only diet is a higher rate of dental disease because the dry food causes more friction and may clean tarter off teeth. However, the article suggests that for a cat with a sensitive mouth, a canned food diet is recommended because the dry food may irritate the teeth and gums. It is also suggested that if one of us cats has a decreased appetite that our humans should feed us canned food because the aroma will help bring our appetite back. Now THAT is something I think we can all agree with! Purr!

My V-E-T suggests to my human that she give me at least five wet foods per week to help with normal kidney function. He says that cats are not prone to drinking a lot of water because we originated in the dessert, where most of our hydration came from eating our hunted food. Yay for a medical reason to get Stinky Goodness (wet food)! Personally, I suggest that you talk to your human about getting at least five wet foods per week. Tell him or her to read this article by me!
